This will be a 3-day workshop focused on copper patinas. It is scheduled to happen March 20-22, 2026 at Urban Metal Studio located in Mesa, AZ. (This is in the Phoenix area) All skill levels from total beginners to advanced students are welcomed to sign up for this class.
In this workshop we will explore many different patinas that will work with copper to produce a range of colors and visual textures. There will be some buried patinas and boiling immersion patinas, but most will done using heat and applying chemical solutions with a brush. Students will get hands on experience, leaving with a range of test tiles they’ve created.
In addition we will talk about gold leafing and everybody will be able to try applying it to a test tile.
This workshop is always loads of fun! Compared to the rest of the metalsmithing techniques I use patinas are “instant gratification”. Basically in class I show how I mix a solution. Then demonstrate how I apply it, describing the various properties each chemical seems to have. After that everyone gets to do their own test tile of that patina. Then we move on to the next until we run out of time. Usually things work out such that there is time to explore your own variations as well.
Urban Metal Studio is an awesome facility to host a patina workshop! There are very few places that have enough well ventilated exhaust stations to even hold this workshop in. I aim to have no more than 2 people to a station so there is limited down time and we can all keep moving along, playing, and learning how to do more patinas. Not only is this studio great for ventilated stations to work at, it is also spacious and well equipped, including some very nice shears that can quickly cut up sheet copper into test tiles should you need to.

Hopefully no one who signs up will need to cancel, however if you do I will refund you, minus a $50 administrative fee through the end of February. If you need to cancel after that I’ll only refund you, minus the $50 fee, if I am able to find someone else to fill your spot. I’ll try to fill it, but it gets really hard to find people able to step in on such short notice.
