Who we are

Our website address is: https://www.davidhuang.org

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

To be honest I don’t fully know what all data the various programs and plug ins that make up this site collect. I’m just a generally low tech guy who hammers metal and makes art. For this privacy policy I am pretty much using the pre made form page WordPress is offering me and trying to fill in the blank spots as best I can. Basically I’m going to use information you provide through interactions on this site to respond to you. I’m not looking to sell your data to marketers, spammers, or the like. I am using some of the fancy things like Google analytics that in some way tracks who visits the site and where they are from. I don’t really understand what they do to get this info or how they then use it.

I’m adding an e-commerce store to this site, but very deliberately using the services of companies like Paypal and Stripe to collect credit card info and process the sales. I don’t want to be responsible for securing it! If you pay me by check I will likely write your address and/or contact info down in my sales book just in case I need it to contact you regarding your purchase.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

If you contact me I will be using the information to try and respond to you and any questions you might have. Your message will probably end up saved in my “saved” emails folder.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

As I noted above I do have this feature on the site, and as also noted I don’t really understand how it works. I use the aggregate data to feed my curiosity of what material people seem to be most interested in and just generally whether the site is getting enough visitors to make it worth the effort of producing content.

Who we share your data with

Beyond what the programs and plug ins might be doing in their functioning which I don’t know about I don’t really share the data with anyone, unless of course we are talking about comments and such that you might make on the site. In that case it would obviously be shared with whoever visits the site.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes. (This is all part of the ready made form privacy policy. I’m honestly not sure I’d know how to do all this!)

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Your contact information

It is suggested that I provide you with a contact method for privacy specific concerns. I don’t quite get what this is about, but you can email me. huang@davidhuang.org

Additional information

I don’t really understand any of the rest of this. Like I noted before, I’m pretty much a Luddite when it comes to computer technology. As far as I know I’m using what is currently standard software programs and plug-ins. If you are really concerned about your data it would probably be best to not enter it into this site because I really don’t understand what happens with it. I’m not even sure I know how to access it all. For the e-commerce store part it is no accident I’m using other payment service to collect and process your credit cards and such. I don’t want to know your numbers or be responsible for securing them. I’m leaving that to the professionals.
