Workshop – Raising and Chasing Vessel Forms

Luminous Relic #1601 by David Huang

Due to the COVID-19 virus this workshop has been unfortunately been cancelled.  If you had signed up for the class I expect someone from Metalwerx will be in contact with you soon, or you may also contact them.  It’s a bummer, but not unexpected at this point.  We may try again next year.

This year I am returning again to Metalwerx for their Summer with the Masters series to teach a 5 day class on raising and chasing vessel forms from July 8-12, 2020. As a heads up, this will be the only time I plan to teach raising this year. So if you are interested in this you may want to jump on it. My classes at Metalwerx usually fill up. Metalwerx is located at 50 Guinan Street, Waltham, MA 02451. This is in the Boston area.

The studio there has a nice selection of stakes which we will be using for the first 2 and half days or so to focus on raising vessel forms, looking at both single and multi-node pieces. Then on that middle day we usually switch over to focusing on how to go about embellishing a raised form with chased designs and textures. For the chasing portion we will be using microcrystalline wax instead of the traditional pitches. Personally I find the wax so much easier to use for this application.

I’ll also be covering how to make your own chasing tools and participants will have the opportunity to make some of their own. We’ll go over how to finish off a vessel edge with a wire rim as well, though often students don’t get this far on their own pieces.

Like most of my workshops, this is technique oriented rather than project oriented. I’m looking more to get you information about the techniques and not worried so much about everyone being able to finish a project. You’ll likely have a vessel or two well along the way but not completed by the end of the class.

This workshop is open to all skill levels, though having some basic metalworking experience would probably be helpful.

It should be a wonderful 5 days of hammers and fire pushing some copper around! I hope to see you there. Again, here is the link to registration on the Metalwerx website.

Please leave a comment if you feel inspired to.
