Magazine Articles, and other things I've written

For a while I was writing a monthly column in Art Calendar Magazine. What I wrote was mostly focused on financial aspects of being and artist. More specifically how I was able to get going as a full-time professional artist faster by keeping my cost of living low. Later articles started branching out into other aspects of being in business as an artist.

Since I own the copyright to these essays I've decided to republish them here. They are in the original unedited form so the content may differ a bit from what was in the magazine. (This may also show why having an editor can be a good thing.) If anyone reading this is a publisher and is interested in reprinting one in your publication please feel free to contact me. My email address is: huang @ davidhuang . org (Be sure to remove the spaces in the preceding address. I'm told posting an email address this way helps to stop spam web bots from picking it up and further clogging my inbox!)

Eventually I stopped writing for the magazine. I felt like I was running out of worthwhile information to share. I didn't want to just keep rehashing the old material to come up with another article and fill space in the next months publication. That doesn't seem fair to the subscribers. The publication also changed ownership and editorial format. My writing just didn't fit into the new format without serious editing. I felt like my voice and the subtleties of the message were being lost in the final published version. So I just stopped the writing.

The last article I wrote for the magazine, "Artwork that Connects", never did get published. I feel like it was a good piece, though it was about 3 times longer than they wanted. Anyway, I'll publish it here on my website. I may add new articles from time to time. I do now have ideas for other essays that might be of help or interest to other artists.

I hope you enjoy the writing and find some information of value to you.
